Obtaining a provisional licence

All pupils must possess a valid Irish Provisional Driving licence.

This must be valid (in date), in the name of the pupil taking the lesson, and for the correct category - B for a car.

Provisional Driving licences must be carried by the pupil at each lesson, as it is now a legal requirement and may be checked by the Garda.

Further information regarding carrying a license and restrictions on provisional license holders is available online, as is information about the Provisional License and how to obtain one. Downloadable forms for eyesight reports and medical reports (when required) are also available online.

The Theory Test

If you do not have an Irish provisional licence, you will need to take the Theory Test, and pass this before a Provisional licence will be issued. The Theory Test is a computer-based test in which the candidate must attempt to answer 40 questions.

These questions appear on a touch screen computer and are multiple choice, with three possible answers for each question. The candidate will pass the theory test if 35 correct answers are recorded. Once passed, a certificate of passing is issued. This is required to obtain your Provisional licence.
