Prepare for your driving test
The driving test is designed to establish whether you:
- know the Rules of the Road;
- have the knowledge and skill to drive competently in accordance with
those rules;
- drive with regard for the safety and convenience of other road users
You should:
- carefully study the Rules of the Road booklet (if you have
never read it and do not know what it says - how can you possibly hope to
pass a test which is based on the book ?????)
- you will be asked some questions on the Rules of the Road

- you will be asked to identify some road signs
- you will have to perform some hand signals
- you need to drive according to the RULES of the Road
- seek the assistance of a good experienced and qualified driving instructor
- practise driving as much as possible on all types of roads
- in all types of traffic situations, including driving at night
- keep good position in all situations
- use your mirrors correctly
- look around you when mirrors do not show everything
(blind spots)
- obey road signs and traffic lights
- drive safely and within speed limits
- look carefully and keep good position when joining main roads
- understand roundabout rules especially regarding position,
indication and priority
- don't drive too slowly or too cautiously
- you should not delay others by being over cautious
- build up your driving experience and confidence before applying for your
test
- you need to be driving as a driver — not a learner — to pass
- if you have your own car, practise what you have learnt until it is
near perfect
- Get a parent or friend to accompany you and help you master the
techniques
- we can supply a record log for you to record personal practice with
an accompanying driver
- we are happy to allow a parent or mature driver to
accompany you in a lesson to see what standard you have reached and get
some tips from your instructor as how to help you in your private
practice
- make sure you can correctly perform the manoeuvres required in the test
- turn your car in the road to face the opposite direction (3 point
turn!)
- reverse around a corner
- perform a hill start
- know your car
- you will be asked to show that you know the cars secondary controls
- you will be asked to explain how you would perform some
technical checks
- be observant
- be aware of all that is happening around you
- look at what is happening around you and act
upon what you see
- anticipate (work out what other road users are doing) and avoid
conflicts
- be aware of hazards (problems / dangers) and avoid them safely and
in time
