Please, please, please DO NOT leave your driving test preparation until it is too late. Putting this on the proverbial 'long finger' will not help you. The driving test is like any other examination. You need to:
If you do not know what to do, if you do not practise, if you do not get rid of bad habits etc, you should not expect to pass your test
Pre-test lessons are conducted with people about to take the State Driving Test
I feel that an initial assessment is advisable as early as possible before the test. Please do not leave it until a day or so before your test, because many learner drivers have habits which will not get them through the test. Time and practice are needed to hone driving skills to the Test Standard.
A pre-test will usually be taken on a typical driving test route. It will be conducted in a similar manner to that of a real test, i.e. with no help or advise from your instructor, just instructions as to where to go and what to do. This will be marked as an examiner would do in your test, and at the conclusion a marked sheet will be given to you showing your faults.
Here, the similarity with the test will finish because your instructor will explain exactly what you did, why the marks were recorded on the sheet, and where the mistakes took place. This means that you will know exactly what you did and, assuming you have not left it until the last minute, you will have the opportunity to put those mistakes right before your proper test. More than one pre-test may be required.
A pre-test requires 1½ hours to complete properly and is charged accordingly (currently €60)
Some people learn to drive and may sit and pass their driving test but then never own or drive a car for a time. Other people, through illness or other reason may have to cease driving for a time.
After situations like this, it may be advisable to have a number of refresher lessons to 'get you back into shape'. Dublin roads are becoming increasingly busier and more dangerous.
In any work situation, when we train for something we have to 'update' our skills on a regular basis. It makes sense to do the same with driving.
Some insurance companies offer reduced premiums or discounts to people who do a training course with them, or who have an assessment with them.
Hibernian (for example) offer an assessment to learner drivers, which if completed successfully, will reduce your premium. They also offer their 'ignition' course to people who have recently passed their driving test but are paying premium insurance costs by not having built up a no claims bonus.
We offer advice and assistance to help you take these and other courses.
The driving test should not be seen as the final stage in your driving skills. Certain aspects of driving you are not allowed to do as a learner (i.e. Motorway driving) and other skills may require to be improved. We offer various opportunities for you to improve and enhance your skills.
